Managing Partner

Executive Management

John is a managing partner at TwinFocus and serves as General Counsel. He has been with the firm since January 2007, six months after it launched. In his role, he heads the firm’s wealth structuring and tax planning efforts. He also plays a multi-faceted role in working with the CIO to guide the firm’s investment activities and global strategy. Along with the other managing partners, John plays a critical role in managing key client relationships.

John leads TwinFocus’ efforts in formulating a multi-disciplinary approach of seamlessly integrating tax planning with investment management, as he believes both are distinct yet critically inseparable disciplines that cannot be ignored in consulting with global ultra-high-net-worth clients and institutions.

On the investment and wealth structuring side, complex financial modeling plays an integral role in John’s analysis of client business activities, as well as diligence of real estate, direct investments, and tax-subsidized investment funds.

John holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and is a licensed member of the Massachusetts Bar, the CFA® Institute and the Boston Security Analysts Society. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Boston University where he returned to earn his Juris Doctor and his Master of Laws degree in Taxation.

My strengths and interests

Get to know John.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The best aspects of my job are a) the entrepreneurial atmosphere that the founders have successfully instilled, b) the fact that every day is different, and being exposed to different fact patterns allow me to constantly learn and c) I work with some of the most amazing clients.

What unique personal skills make you great at your role at TwinFocus?

I use my financial, legal and tax skills to craft effective and efficient solutions for clients. This multi-faceted approach can address several objectives at the same time—which put smiles on clients’ faces.

If you were not working at TwinFocus and you knew you couldn’t fail at whatever you did, what would you do?

The only job I would like is to be the US Secretary of State, helping our country formulate geopolitical and geo-economic foreign policy when the liberal international order is fragile and under attack. Key decisions are required to assure that post-war western values prevail for generations to come.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Reading and learning—I have an insatiable thirst for learning.

What personal accomplishments are you most proud of?

Besides helping the founders build TwinFocus, I am most proud of my accomplishments in my community and non-profit work. Helping those who cannot help themselves when they are down and vulnerable is one of the most rewarding feelings.

How do you feel that TwinFocus makes a difference in the lives of its clients?

We make a difference simply by being our clients’ safety net if the unexpected happens and covering all their personal, financial, philanthropic and multi-generational needs to allow them to enjoy life, their families and their altruistic objectives.
